Objective: Equip gym trainers with the knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively to medical emergencies and injuries in a gym setting, ensuring client safety and wellbeing.
Duration: 1 Day (6-7 Hours)
Morning Session (3 Hours)
1. Introduction to First Aid and Emergency Response (30 minutes)
Importance of first aid for gym trainers
Legal responsibilities and duty of care
Emergency action plan for gyms
Understanding risk and prevention
2. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED Training (1 Hour)
Recognizing the signs of a heart attack
Chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea
Performing CPR: Step-by-step guide
Adult CPR: Compression-to-breath ratio
Hands-only CPR vs traditional CPR
Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) (where available)
Locating and operating AED in emergencies
Safety precautions during AED use
3. Responding to Loss of Consciousness (30 minutes)
Recognizing fainting, dehydration, or other causes of passing out
First aid steps: Recovery position, checking for breathing, and calling for help
When to escalate: Unresponsive individuals
4. Handling Severe Bleeding and Cuts (30 minutes)
Types of wounds commonly seen in gyms
Lacerations, abrasions, and puncture wounds
Applying pressure to control bleeding
Cleaning and dressing wounds
When to refer to medical professionals

5. Managing Bone Fractures and Joint Injuries (1 Hour)
Recognizing signs of a broken bone or dislocation
Swelling, deformity, and severe pain
Immobilizing the injury with splints or supports
Avoiding further harm while waiting for emergency help
Handling minor joint sprains vs major injuries
6. Dealing with Muscle Injuries (1 Hour)
Identifying and responding to:
Severe muscle strains (sharp pain, swelling, reduced mobility)
Muscle cramps (common causes and immediate action)
First aid techniques:
RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
Gentle stretching and massage for cramps
7. Responding to Weightlifting-Related Emergencies (45 minutes)
Scenario-based training:
Weights falling on a client: How to respond
Safely removing weights without causing further injury
Assessing for crush injuries, fractures, or spinal damage
8. Scenario Practice and Role-Playing (30 minutes)
Trainers participate in mock scenarios to practice skills:
Heart attack during a session
Severe bleeding from a dropped weight
Fainting on the treadmill
